Sun Country Dance Theatre (SCDT) is proud to present its 14th annual Spring Youth Concert, featuring the return of our original story ballet, “Little Red Riding Hood”, to be presented at the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, April 10, 2022, at 2:30 p.m.
As all arts organizations continue to navigate their performance seasons during these challenging times, we’re grateful that we’ve been able to continue to present these “live” dance performances for our community. SCDT is also proud to be able to continue to honor our mission of providing invaluable arts opportunities for the youth of our community, and as such we will once again be offering FREE tickets to all children ages 11 and under (available through the box office only – not on-line). All other Tickets for the production are $15.00.
The return of SCDT’s original story ballet, “Little Red Riding Hood”, which premiered in 2013, will highlight the production. Choreographed by SCDT Artistic Director, Judy Benton, this enchanting ballet has been adapted from the fairy tale and follows Little Red throughout many adventures on her birthday. Scene 1, we find Little Red enjoying her birthday party, with her many friends, mother, mischievous little brother, and, of course, Granny, who presents Little Red with her beautiful new red cape. In Scene 2, we follow Little Red, accompanied by her best friend – the Duck - on her journey through the Forest to Granny’s house, where she encounters many magical creatures along her way, including the mystical Phoenix, Fireflies, Water Lilies, and Woodland Spirits. Of course, the Wolf is always close by! In Scene 3, we find Granny alone in her house – who is suddenly visited and captured by the big bad wolf. Luckily, Little Red arrives – along with the Huntsman - and they capture the Wolf and are able to free Granny. This exciting ballet is certainly one to be enjoyed by the entire family – with its wonderful dancing, costumes, drama, comedy, and FUN!!
In addition, to “Little Red Riding Hood”, the performance will also showcase the talented dancers of SCDT performing a diverse array of newly choreographed works ranging in styles from classical ballet to contemporary, and modern dance. Contributions to the production by special guest performers from Central Florida Ballet (Orlando) further celebrates the diversity of the arts and the collaboration of many performing artists to share the love of their art with our community.
This program is funded in part by a grant from the City of Gainesville, Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs Department; Sun Country Sports Center; India Bazaar, Indian Cuisine, Indian Street Food; D&P Dentistry; Matchmaker Realty of Alachua County, Inc.; Delmond Dentristry; and Hale Management Group, Inc.
