May the Fourth be with you! Happy Star Wars day everyone! Quarantine has put a damper on birthdays, holidays and graduations already, but this is one day where our usual celebration can stay mostly the same. We can still enjoy an all-day movie marathon, Star Wars themed snacks and getting out the lightsabers we have stored somewhere in the garage. But, this is a great opportunity to introduce your little ones into the wonderful world that is Star Wars! Almost all of the movies are rated PG, so put one on and get to work making one of these DIY lightsabers. (We apologize in advance for how many times you will be poked with a paper towel roll after making these.)

With a paper towel roll

Materials needed:

  • Paper towel roll
  • Paint brushes
  • Glow in the dark paint
  • Black and silver paint

All you have to do to make these easy and adorable light sabers is get a paper towel roll, mark off where you want the handle to be, and use glow in the dark paint to coat the entire rest of the roll. You can make whatever color lightsaber you want, whether it be blue, green, purple or even red if your mischievous little one wants to be a darksider! for the handle, paint it black and silver to mimic the ones in the movies. Let it dry overnight and there you go! You have your very own jedi-in-training! If you want to make these a little more advanced, try connecting two or more paper towel rolls together with duct tape before painting to make it longer.

With a pool noodle

Materials needed:

  • Pool noodle
  • Black and silver duct tape

This Star Wars Day DIY is even easier, and waterproof! If you’re already shopping for some new pool toys, add pool noodles to your list! Just wrap black and silver duct tape around the base of the pool noodle to resemble the handle of the lightsabers from Star Wars and you’re good to go! If you want to make these pool noodles work better for you, try cutting the tape into more intricate pieces to more accurately match the handle design, or cut the pool noodle itself if it’s too long for your kiddo.
