Free Things to Do In Gainesville This Fall!

FREE Things To Do With Your Kids

Fall is the perfect time to spend quality time with your family in the cool weather, but sometimes it can be hard to think of things to do that aren’t expensive. Here are a few fun and free things to do with your kids this fall!

Go to a Local Museum

The Florida Museum of Natural History and the Harm Museum of Art are both free and perfect for escaping the chilly fall weather! Also, the Butterfly Rainforest in the Florida Museum is a must-visit Gainesville activity. There is an admission fee for the Butterfly Rainforest.

Drive around to see Christmas lights

Before we know it, the whole city will be covered in Christmas lights for us to enjoy. On a cold evening after dark, pile the kiddos into the car with blankets, turn on some Christmas music (even if it’s still November) and take your family around to see the sparkling lights. This cost nothing, but your children will love the idea of doing something special, even if it is just driving around.

Have a picnic

Picnics are perfect in the cool weather! On the weekend, make sure the whole family is together and pick your favorite park to go to for a nice picnic lunch! If you all love sandwiches, make some turkey sandwiches with cranberry sauce smeared on the bread to get into the Thanksgiving spirit! Or, you can make your family’s favorite soup, pack it up in a thermos to keep it warm and bring some bowls to serve it in. Get creative with the menu, and don’t forget some water bottles or juice boxes for drinks! Enjoy the beautiful weather while you are spending quality time together over a good meal.

Donate to a local food drive

This time of year, many organizations and churches will have food drives where you can donate non-perishable food items so that families in need will have food for the holidays. Gather up a bag of food from your pantry that you want to donate, or go to the grocery store. Have your kiddos help you, and explain to them why you are gathering food. This is a great opportunity to teach your children the importance of generosity and giving, not only during the holiday season but all year long! When you have all your food together, throw on your jackets, hop in the car and head to your local food drive. This is one of the best free things to do with your kids, and it’s the perfect way to spend a nice fall day!
