Ronald McDonald House® Gainesville: When Family Stays, a Community Stays

At Ronald McDonald House® Gainesville, we believe family is not a visitor. Family stays.

Behind the door of Room 49, that belief came to life in a very special way.

Ten-year-old Cooper came to Gainesville for something his family desperately hoped for: a new heart. Through the waiting, the lifesaving transplant and the long road to recovery, Ronald McDonald House Gainesville became home for Cooper and his family for more than 200 nights.

After his transplant, Cooper returned to the House with his family, and Room 49 became home. Cooper made sure it was a home filled with life. He brought fun and positivity everywhere he went, along with a huge love for dinosaurs and chocolate chip cookies. During a season filled with uncertainty and incredibly difficult days, Cooper’s family never had to leave his side. They could simply be together.

That is what Family Stays means.

It is more than a room. It is a warm meal after a long day at the hospital. It is siblings staying together and parents remaining close to their child. It is a kitchen, a bed, a familiar face and a place to exhale. Sometimes, it is even a chocolate chip cookie waiting for a 10-year-old who has been through more than most of us can imagine. Stories like Cooper’s unfold behind our doors every day.

Founded in 1982 by Gainesville physicians who saw families sleeping in hospital waiting rooms and cars, Ronald McDonald House Gainesville began as an 18-room House. As the need grew, so did we. Today, our House has grown to 50 family suites, allowing more families to stay close to their child’s care.

Yet even with 50 suites, the need continues to exceed our capacity. For families we cannot accommodate, the need to remain close to their child does not disappear simply because our rooms are full.

So far in 2026, we have welcomed 316 families across our House and Family Room, providing nearly 11,000 nights of care, with families at the House staying together an average of 41 days while their child receives treatment. Behind each of those numbers is a family who stayed. Our care also extends inside UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital through the Ronald McDonald House® Family Room, giving families a place to rest and recharge without leaving the hospital.

This holiday season, our Behind Every Door, There’s a Story campaign will share more of the stories that live within our House and what is possible when families stay.

Because behind every door is more than a room. There are hard days and hopeful ones. There are milestones, meals, laughter and sometimes dinosaurs and chocolate chip cookies.

And when family stays, a community stays with them.
