Two Alachua County Alumni Make Broadway Debuts

Two Alachua County Public Schools (ACPS) graduates made their Broadway debuts this summer, giving families in the Gainesville area another reason to celebrate the arts in local schools, according to an Aug. 12 press release from ACPS.

Chrissy Metz, a 2001 graduate of Buchholz High School, appeared as Angélique in the Broadway musical “& Juliet.” Metz, best known for playing Kate Pearson on NBC’s “This Is Us,” began her Broadway run in June. Her limited engagement is scheduled through Sept. 13.

Terrence Williams Jr., a 2015 graduate of Eastside High School, is making his Broadway debut in “Titaníque” as a vacation swing. The role has him covering several characters, including Victor Garber, Jack Dawson, Luigi, the Iceberg, the Seaman and the Tour Guide. “Titaníque” is scheduled to continue at the St. James Theatre through Sept. 20.

Local Teachers Who Helped Shape Their Paths

The two performers also share a connection to Diana Rollo, ACPS’ fine arts supervisor, who was their chorus teacher during high school, according to the district.

Rollo said she recognized that both students had unusual talent and believed teachers could help young performers develop confidence while giving them opportunities to grow.

Metz recently recognized Rollo during an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” calling her a teacher who “changed my life,” according to the ACPS release.

Williams also received encouragement from Tammy Meyers, his theater teacher at Eastside High School. Meyers recalled Williams’ performance as Charlie Brown in “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” and described him as a standout performer.

What This Means for Local Families

For Gainesville-area families, the story highlights the opportunities that school arts programs can provide beyond the classroom. ACPS says students have access to arts programs along with academic, career and technical education opportunities.
