Yesterday, June 11, in a city commission meeting, Gainesville commissioners voted to cut city funding of school resource officers. The motion was approved with a 4 to 3 vote.

This is not to say that school resource officers will completely disappear, but instead, it will now be up to the Alachua County School District to fund the officers, which would be about $900,000. Commissioner Gail Johnson said that there is a lot that the city can do with the $900,000 in its budget. The city will start negotiations with the Alachua County School District as the responsibility of funding school resources officers changes hands.

More information to come as the Alachua County School District responds to the situation. Follow the City of Gainesville – Government and Alachua County Public Schools on Facebook to stay up to date on new information about schools!
